Water – the future of humanity and business?

It's no secret that water enlivens and sustains the entire planet, but in the 21st century, natural resources are facing a crisis of their own. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), there are approximately 1.3 quintillion litres of water on Earth, but only 0.12% is suitable for consumption or use in industry and agriculture. Although 2/3 of the planet's surface is covered by water, only 1% of the supply is realistically available for human use.

Increasingly, companies are addressing the issue of ecology through the prism of CSR activities, but there are also players in the market who want to engage the whole of society to shape a completely different dimension of the planet. One of them is Blue Boson, whose CEO is Robert Zagozdzon. How can an international start-up by an experienced entrepreneur breathe new life into water?

“Water Giants”

FAO analysts estimate that the largest water reserves are in Brazil, Russia, Canada, Indonesia, China, Colombia, Peru, and India. Of these eight ‘water giants’, no fewer than seven also have some of the highest greenhouse gas emission rates (China holds the record, followed by the US, India, Russia and Canada, Brazil, and Indonesia). In addition, access to clean resources is itself proving to be a major problem – the people of Sao Paulo, for example, have suffered a severe shortage of drinking water in recent years. This is largely due to inadequate infrastructure, but natural resources are also experiencing the greatest crisis in history. Back in 2015, scientists sounded the alarm that the water level in Russia’s Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest inland body of water, had fallen to its lowest level in 30 years.

8 million people do not have access to clean drinking water

The World Health Organization estimates that 8 million people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water, and more than 3.5 million people die each year from diseases caused by the consumption of unfiltered liquids. Scientists estimate that if the phenomenon of water flow is combined with continued population growth, by 2025 up to 1.8 billion of the world’s population will be living in areas without access to safe drinking water. Robert Zagozdzon and his Blue Boson project have decided to respond to this challenge.

Three levels of hydrological solutions

Blue Boson is an international company specialising in new technologies capable of averting the greatest crisis in the history of the world, thanks to hydrological solutions based on three levels: physical, chemical and energy. Robert Zagozdzon’s team includes not only highly qualified experts, but also researchers from Europe, Asia, the United States and Mexico. Blue Boson has established collaborations with the Technical Universities of Warsaw, Wroclaw, Brno and Košice and the University of Kobe in Japan, among others, to ensure that the company’s projects are based on the latest scientific knowledge.

The company has already taken a number of steps to holistically explore the potential of water and possible solutions to the current crisis. Thanks to the scientific work of Laura Maestro (University of Oxford) and collaboration with quantum physicists from Italy, Mexico, Spain and the USA, the group led by Robert Zagozdzon, among others, has published a report outlining the planet’s most pressing water resource issues, as well as viable tools with potential to be implemented in the coming years. The goal? In the short term, to combine our own research findings with molecular technology. In the long term, to fight for a better future.

The environment is becoming a higher priority for the society, than the economy. The current policy of the European Union, which must address an energy crisis of unprecedented proportions, is a prime example of such approach in action. But can we reconcile these two aspects?
